After the site fell into disrepair, a group of volunteers kept the engines looking lovely, and funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the English Heritage have meant that you can still visit today. Sir Joseph Bazalgette made probably the single biggest contribution to the health of Victorian Londoners. It is because of his work that the Thames is now the cleanest metropolitan river in the world. He constructed an extensive network of 82 miles of enclosed sewers culminating on the south side of the river at Crossness Pumping Station. Erith Pier is modern pier replacing the original. Here the Thames Path extension ends at the mouth of the river Darent. From here you have a choice to continue on the London LOOP ahead into Crayford or re-trace your steps back to Erith. The London LOOP is another long distance path that encircles London and takes a loop beginning from Erith and ending at Coldharbour point on the other side of the Thames. The Thames Path Extension doesn’t quite make it all the way to the Thames Estuary. It only goes ten miles, ending at Crayford Ness, right on the edge of Greater London. It ends at the point the River Darent meets the Thames, and there’s no easy way to get across the Darent to continue further downs the Thames.
