Millions of people across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya identify as Arab. But ancient DNA reveals a far older story — one that began thousands of years before the first Arab conquests.
In 2018, scientists analyzed 15,000-year-old human remains from Taforalt, Morocco, and uncovered genetic connections to ancient Near Eastern and sub-Saharan African populations. Another study revealed that indigenous Maghrebi ancestry survived for thousands of years, long before the arrival of Arabic-speaking populations. These ancient roots are closely connected to the history of the Amazigh, North Africa's indigenous peoples.
Then came the Arab conquests of the 7th century, followed by centuries of migration, intermarriage, and cultural transformation. Arabic gradually spread across the Maghreb, but genetic studies reveal that Arabization did not mean complete population replacement. Many Arabic-speaking North Africans retain substantial indigenous Maghrebi ancestry, alongside varying contributions from the Middle East, Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa.
*So are Maghrebis genetically Arab, Amazigh, or something far more complex?* The answer reveals a distinction between ancestry, language, and identity — and a genetic history stretching back thousands of years before modern borders existed.
