On October 11, 2016 — ten years ago this week — Samsung killed the Galaxy Note 7. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was supposed to be the best Android phone of 2016: a 5.7-inch curved display, an iris scanner, water resistance, and the S Pen, priced up to $890. Reviewers loved it. Then the phones started catching fire. In this episode of Product Graveyard, we reconstruct the fifty-three-day disaster: the 2.5-million-unit recall of September 2016, the "safe" replacements that caught fire too — including one on Southwest Airlines flight 994 — and the FAA emergency order of October 15, 2016 that banned the phone from every flight. Samsung's own January 2017 root-cause report found two separate battery defects, not one — and the company put the cost at at least $5.3 billion. Great ideas. Bad timing. Spectacular failures. *Chapters* 0:00 — Hook: the phone airlines banned 0:17 — The promise: summer 2016 1:28 — The cracks: fires, then the recall 2:21 — The "safe" replacements also burned 3:12 — Killed: Oct 11 discontinuation + FAA ban 3:46 — Battery autopsy: two defects, not one 4:22 — The damage: at least $5.3 billion 5:17 — Verdict: rushed to beat the iPhone *SEO keywords* samsung galaxy note 7 documentary, why note 7 failed, galaxy note 7 recall 2016, note 7 explosion battery, note 7 discontinued october 2016, note 7 faa ban airplanes, southwest flight 994 note 7, note 7 vs iphone 7, samsung sdi battery defect, amperex note 7 welding burrs, note 7 5.3 billion recall cost, note 7 root cause report january 2017, galaxy note 8 redemption, cpsc note 7 recall, failed smartphones *Hashtags* #ProductGraveyard #GalaxyNote7 #Samsung #TechHistory #FailedTech #TechDocumentary #Note7Recall #2010s #AirplaneBan #SmartphoneHistory #BatteryFail
