Foreigners Went Inside an American House and Couldn't Cope

They'd seen the outside. Everybody's seen the outside. That part looked exactly like the films. Then somebody opened the door and let them in. A Norwegian takes one look at a ceiling fan and asks, seriously, what happens if it falls on him. A Brit spends two weeks in an American house unable to find the washing machine, because he keeps looking in the kitchen — and here it lives in a room of its own, with the dryer beside it, and that room is often bigger than a British kitchen. Somebody discovers there is a grinder in the sink that eats what's left on the plate. Another finds a wardrobe you can walk into and says American closets can hold an entire emotional breakdown. This video follows visitors and new arrivals from Britain, Norway and across Europe as they spend time inside ordinary American homes — the air conditioning that keeps every building freezing all summer, the plug sockets with no switch on them, the toilet that confused an entire comment section, the walk-in closets, and a basement sitting empty that one visitor points out would be somebody's flat where he comes from. That's his line, and it's the sharpest one here: America has more room than it needs. He means it as a compliment and a complaint at the same time. None of it is expensive. Most of it wasn't designed to impress anyone. It's simply what a house looks like when it was built on the assumption that there was room.
