The Most Heartbreaking Moments in Horse Racing History

Horse racing can be beautiful, and it can be brutal. Devon Loch collapsed 40 yards from Grand National glory. Phar Lap died with arsenic in his system. Shergar was kidnapped and never found, and Ferdinand, a Derby winner, was lost to slaughter. Real Quiet missed the Triple Crown by four inches, and Smarty Jones was caught in the final strides. Go For Wand, Eight Belles and Barbaro broke down on racing’s biggest stages. And Ruffian, the unbeaten filly, never once trailed another horse.
