St. Dismas, traditionally known as the Good Thief, is remembered for one of the most extraordinary encounters with Jesus in the Gospels.
Crucified beside Christ, Dismas had reached the end of his life. He could not undo his past, escape his punishment, or make up for the wrong he had committed.
Yet in his final moments, he recognized something that others around him failed to see.
While another criminal mocked Jesus, Dismas acknowledged his own guilt, defended Christ's innocence, and made a simple request: "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
Jesus responded with a promise of Paradise.
In this episode, we take a longer look at St. Dismas and the moment recorded in Luke 23:39–43. Although Scripture does not give the repentant criminal a name, Christian tradition remembers him as Dismas, a powerful witness to repentance, faith, and God's mercy.
His story reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of Christ's mercy. But it also challenges us not to wait until our final moments to turn toward God.
Even at the cross, mercy was possible.
St. Dismas, pray for us.
