MONUSCO chief James Swan begins a visit to Goma as fighting continues in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The UN mission says he plans to engage representatives of the FRN, which announced that it would succeed the AFC, to discuss civilian protection, access and support for ceasefire monitoring. In this Kinyarwanda report, Rwanda Updates Media follows the announcement of Swan’s 2 November 2026 visit, the purpose of the planned contacts and developments in North Kivu and South Kivu. MONUSCO describes the engagement as a continuation of its previous exchanges with AFC/M23 in support of its mandate, particularly assistance to ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanisms, including the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism Plus — EJVM+/MCVE+. The report also examines: Masisi: reported FARDC and Wazalendo advances at Kazinga following clashes with FRN fighters. October military figures: the Congolese army’s announcement that 58 fighters surrendered and another 20 were captured across Lubero, Masisi, Walikale and Kalehe. Recruitment allegations: statements attributed by the army to surrendered fighters concerning forced recruitment and limited training. Civilian displacement: reports of families fleeing fighting in both Kivu provinces, including arrivals in the Buzi area of Kalehe. The figure of 78 refers to the combined surrenders and captures announced by the army, not a reported death toll. Military claims and allegations are attributed to their sources.
