Die faunhaften Kanequa verlangen ein Leben für ein Leben: Arion soll ihren Erretter Dilial-Gor am Grund des Tartaros ablösen. Garrian-Zin zeichnet mit Kreide eine Tür an die Wand, Portale reißen den PHOENIX auf, Dutzende Kanequa dringen ein. Am Ende trifft Sky, die Bordintelligenz, eine Entscheidung – und Perry stimmt zu, obwohl es ihm fast das Herz zerreißt. Ein Leben für ein Leben. A bolt of lightning strikes the scientist Arion Mbinguni – he vanishes and falls into the shaft. Perry Rhodan, Meghan Ontares, Anzu Gotjian and Liam Barstow follow him into the depth aboard the PHOENIX. They cannot go faster than three hundred kilometres an hour, and Arion keeps falling ahead of them. On the walls: a ladder, a ruined shed and giant paintings in the style of ancient vases. Just above a sphere station hanging on two bridges in the shaft, strangers catch Arion. The faun-like Kanequa demand a life for a life: Arion is to take the place of their saviour Dilial-Gor at the bottom of the Tartaros. Garrian-Zin draws a door in chalk on the wall, portals tear open the PHOENIX and dozens of Kanequa pour in. In the end Sky, the ship's AI, makes a decision – and Perry agrees, though it nearly tears his heart in two.
