We say we need more Black educators. We talk about recruitment, teacher diversity, and strengthening the educator pipeline. But getting educators through the door is only part of the work.
The next question is just as important:
What are we asking educators to enter and have we created the conditions for them to thrive once they get there?
This week on Let’s Talk Power Live, I sit down with Sharif El-Mekki, founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development, for a conversation that moves beyond recruitment to examine teacher development, leadership, retention, and the conditions that shape what educators experience once they enter our schools.
Who is encouraged to see teaching as a profession worth pursuing? Who receives strong preparation and meaningful opportunities to grow? Whose expertise is trusted? Who is given room to lead? Who carries responsibilities that remain unnamed or uncompensated? And what happens when the educators schools say they desperately need enter environments that make it difficult for them to stay, grow, and thrive?
These are not simply workforce questions.
They are power questions.
We often talk about “the system” as though it exists apart from the people within it. But systems are built and sustained through decisions about policies, resources, expectations, professional learning, leadership, curriculum, workload, relationships, and whose voices carry weight.
Over time, those decisions become conditions.
And those conditions shape whether educators merely work in our schools or have the opportunity to develop, exercise their expertise, lead, and thrive within them.
Sharif and I will explore what it means to move beyond recruiting a more diverse educator workforce toward intentionally creating schools and systems where Black educators and ultimately every educator can do their strongest work.
Because teacher diversity does not end with recruitment. Creating conditions where educators can thrive is a power move and an intentional decision.
