Inside the reactor: Exploring Molten Salt Technology

Molten salt reactors (MSRs) are a promising technology currently being explored as a potential option for the future of nuclear energy. In MSRs, the fuel is dissolved in the molten salt, which is then circulated to transfer the heat. But how does a reactor work when the fuel is liquid? What happens inside the reactor core? This animation explains the basic principle of a molten salt reactor – from the role of the fuel salt and nuclear fission to the structure and operation of the reactor core. Using the “Onion Core” concept developed by Copenhagen Atomics as an example, the video shows how the various components interact.
