Super Smash Bros. was released for Nintendo 64 on January 21, 1999 in Japan, April 26, 1999 in North America, and November 19 1999 in Europe. A special version of the game made for China was released on the iQue Player on November 15, 2005. The game was directed by Masahiro Sakurai and was primarily developed by HAL Laboratory. It features gameplay unique from that of other fighting games. Compared to characters in other fighting games, Super Smash Bros. characters have simple movesets and lack complicated button inputs and lengthy natural combos. Instead, Super Smash Bros. emphasizes movement and ringouts. In this game, concepts like platforms and edge-guarding have great emphasis compared to other games that do not possess such concepts by design. It received generally positive reviews, with the consensus being that it is an innovative experience that is fun with friends, though the package is somewhat lean and lacks content similar games possess. The value of Super Smash Bros. comes more from its legacy decades later, being the progenitor of an entire genre of gameplay and laying the foundation for one of the best selling video game franchises of all time. The game was first released in Japan on January 21st, 1999, in North America on April 26th, 1999 and in Europe on November 19th, 1999 for the Nintendo 64. Subsequently, it released on the iQue Player in China on November 15th, 2005. It was re-released on the Wii Virtual Console on January 20th, 2009 in Japan, a day before its 10-year anniversary, and later that year in Europe and North America, before becoming unavailable after the Wii Shop Channel shut down on January 30th, 2019. Super Smash Bros. received positive reviews, with most praise going to its multiplayer mode, while its single-player mode received some criticism.
