Mountain biking gets more complicated when crashing affects more than just you. I started riding later in life, when I already had a family, a job and responsibilities. So risk was part of mountain biking for me from the beginning. This video is about the tension between progression and responsibility: How much risk is worth taking? When are you genuinely managing risk, and when are you simply becoming too cautious? And how do you keep improving without making stupid decisions that could take you off the bike for weeks? I talk about: • risk appetite vs. risk tolerance • good risk vs. bad risk • group pressure and ego • progressing through repetition • why the same feature can mean very different risk for different riders • fatigue and changing risk during a ride • the “would I ride it if nobody was watching?” test • the “Monday test” for judging whether a risk was actually worth taking Chapters: 00:00 Why Am I More Afraid of Crashing? 01:00 How Fear Changes With Experience 02:15 The Real Consequences of a Crash 03:35 When Fear and Ego Collide 04:50 How Social Media Changes Our Expectations 06:00 When Should You Trust Your Fear? 07:00 How I Assess a Difficult Trail Feature 08:35 What Makes a Successful MTB Ride? 09:40 Learning to Ride With Fear For me, progression is not about being willing to crash harder. It is about building enough skill that something which used to feel dangerous eventually becomes manageable. If you ride with a family, demanding job or other responsibilities, I would be interested to hear how this has changed your own approach to risk. #MTB #MountainBiking #MTBOver40
