Getting ready for aeration and overseeding starts before the aerator or grass seed ever comes out. In this video, I’m starting my lawn prep by mowing a little earlier and dropping the mower one setting lower as I gradually work the lawn down toward a much shorter mowing height.
The goal is to get the lawn as short as I reasonably can without scalping it before aeration and overseeding. Since I won’t be able to mow for a while after the seed goes down, this also gives me a better look at how thin the lawn is and helps me clean everything up before seeding.
I also talk about my plan to apply starter fertilizer before overseeding. If I’m putting seed down, I like to get the starter fertilizer applied and watered in ahead of time so those nutrients are already in the soil when it’s time to seed. If you’re only aerating and not overseeding, I explain why I would skip that step.
Along the way, I’m also cleaning up a few weeds and spraying an area in the backyard that I plan to turn into a landscape bed. Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll continue lowering the mowing height as we get closer to the actual aeration and overseeding.
