Born in London during the early 1990s, UK Garage grew from the sounds of US house, garage, jungle, R&B and hip-hop. It became known for its swung drums, deep basslines, chopped vocals and energetic rhythms that filled clubs, pirate radio stations and underground raves across the UK. Artists and producers such as MJ Cole, Artful Dodger, DJ EZ, Wookie, Todd Edwards and many others helped shape the sound into a movement that influenced generations of DJs and producers. UK Garage later gave rise to genres including grime, bassline and dubstep, making it one of the foundations of modern UK electronic music. Today, UK Garage is enjoying a new wave of popularity. A younger generation of artists and DJs are bringing the sound back to festivals, clubs and streaming platforms, while established names continue to push the genre forward. Around the world, UKG has become a regular feature in DJ sets, with producers blending classic garage grooves with house, breaks, jungle and modern bass music.
