In this Ownership Report #17, HiveBits founder Nemanja joins to break down what it takes to tokenize a living asset. HiveBits just completed its futarchy ICO on MetaDAO and won the roadshow it went out on, and the product underneath is simpler than the mechanism suggests. A beehive with an IoT device fitted below it becomes a node that reports honey yield, hive health and harvest conditions. Beekeeping runs in the family for both founders, and the crypto side arrived through the last bull market, NFT projects, and a question about whether a hive could exist onchain.
The case is not honey alone. A hive produces propolis, swarms that can be sold on to other beekeepers, and bee venom, which Nemanja calls the king of all bee products, used in pharma and in a natural cosmetics market worth around 80 billion dollars. The hardware also breaks a labour ceiling: one full time beekeeper can manage roughly 300 hives, and tracking pushes that to 500, close to an 80 percent increase. The same data has a second life, feeding researchers working on colony collapse disorder at a point where bee populations sit 30 percent below where they were twenty years ago. We get into the three pivots that led here, the 50 hives presold at a Solana build station in Belgrade, why the farm sits in Bosnia while Nemanja runs an apitherapy center inside a Serbian national park, and how a container based operation moves hives from harvest to harvest to maximise production. On the capital side, Nemanja explains why fractional ownership was the unlock, why Superteam Balkan mattered for credibility, and why MetaDAO's constraints read to him as protection rather than restriction. His framing: better to hold one percent of a startup that works than a hundred percent of one that fails.

Key themes
Hive as a node, an IoT device under every beehive turning yield, health and harvest into tracked data
Why one beekeeper caps out around 300 hives, and how the hardware pushes that to 500
Bee venom as the king of all bee products, and an $80 billion natural cosmetics market
Three pivots, from in person community building to NFT sales to selling hives one by one
50 hives presold at the Solana build station in Belgrade, and the first precommitted capital
Colony collapse disorder, pesticides, and 30 percent fewer bees than twenty years ago
Hive data as environmental data, and what researchers can do with it
Five year averages, weather prediction, and moving hives by container between harvests
Horizontal and vertical scaling, and a network of beekeepers running the same hardware
Why Western Europe, organic certification, high honey prices and fake honey from China
Why fractional ownership is what pushed HiveBits toward futarchy and MetaDAO
Why MetaDAO's constraints read as protection for both the team and the buyers
