What if the Mazda RX-7 FD had never disappeared — and its rotary evolution had continued all the way to 2027?
In this episode of Legends Reborn Cars, we imagine a production-plausible successor to the legendary third-generation Mazda RX-7. The goal is not to replace the FD or turn it into a generic modern supercar. It is to preserve the low silhouette, compact proportions, rear-wheel-drive balance, driver-focused cockpit and unmistakable rotary character that made the original unforgettable.
Our hypothetical 2027 RX-7 combines a modern twin-rotor engine, sequential twin turbos and discreet 48-volt hybrid assistance. It retains a six-speed manual transmission, three pedals and rear-wheel drive, while introducing adaptive suspension, modern aerodynamics, matrix LED neo pop-up headlights and a fully updated right-hand-drive cockpit.
At the rear, four circular LED taillights preserve one of the FD’s most recognizable signatures, joined by a thin contemporary light line and two rectangular exhaust outlets integrated into the diffuser.
This is an independent speculative design study created for documentary and entertainment purposes. It is not an official Mazda vehicle, announcement or endorsement. The photorealistic concept visuals depict an imagined vehicle and scenes that did not occur in reality.
Would the RX-7 still feel like an RX-7 in 2027? And which automotive legend should return next?
