Phil Collins at 75 on Going Solo, Touring, and the Rock Hall

Phil Collins never expected a solo career to happen. In this Phil Collins interview, the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee looks back on how one successful record turned into a Phil Collins solo career that ran alongside Genesis, and talks about what the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction means at 75. The songs on No Jacket Required started as demos in a home studio, and most of those demos ended up being the finished tracks. Phil Collins says the album kind of made itself, with no big moment where everyone went into a studio to do it properly, just “accident after accident.” Genesis was climbing at the same time. Each album sold a little more, the crowds grew by word of mouth, and “Follow You, Follow Me” brought in a wider audience, close to 50/50 men and women. Once No Jacket Required did well, more people realized Phil Collins was in Genesis too, and that Phil Collins Genesis run led to multiple nights in stadiums, including Giants Stadium in New York. Then there’s the Phil Collins Rock Hall Induction, which Phil Collins calls another step in a long career and a pat on the back that came at a good time. He also talks about the studio in his basement, the ideas and half-finished songs still sitting in it, whether another tour makes sense, and what it means that his kids will see him pick up the award.
