For over a thousand years, Tibetans have copied and composed texts by hand, not only as a way to record Buddhist teachings but also as a meditative practice to focus the mind. The preservation and celebration of Tibetan calligraphy highlights the intimate connection between language expression and cultural identity, especially at a time when Tibetan language study is diminishing.
Jamyang Dorjee Chakrishar is a master calligrapher dedicated to preserving Tibetan language and cultural heritage. His signature calligraphy style, which he terms “Dharma Art,” fuses the artistry of the Tibetan script with rich Buddhist imagery. He holds a world record for the longest calligraphy scroll, measuring 163 meters long.
