Tooro Kingdom has a new king following the death and burial of the late Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The new monarch is Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi (also referred to as Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I).
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended the throne as a young child in 1995 and ruled for more than three decades, died on 27 August 2026 at the age of 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. His body was returned to Uganda, and he was laid to rest on 12 September 2026 at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal after funeral rites that included a service at St John’s Cathedral.
In the period after the king’s death, the Babiito royal clan formed a succession committee. The committee considered eligible princes from the royal lineage and selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma. He is a cousin of the late king, the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma, and a grandson of former Tooro king George David Rukidi III. Before his selection, he was known to many Ugandans as a news anchor and editor at the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC).
The head of the Babiito clan (Musuuga) formally announced the choice, stating that the council had elected Edward Rukidi to the throne. Reports indicate that a majority of the succession committee members supported the decision. Traditional processes associated with the transition, including rituals linked to the burial, were observed as part of the handover of the kingship.
The selection of Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi marks the continuation of the Tooro monarchy through the Babiito royal line following the end of King Oyo’s long reign. The new king assumes the cultural and traditional responsibilities of the Omukama of Tooro.
