Wait… Dawes Make Mountain Bikes Too?!

This time, we have a Dawes mountain bike on the stand, and it’s caught my eye with its fantastic metallic orange frame and surprisingly good specification. With Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, SRAM X7 components and decent suspension forks, there’s plenty of potential here. But after being left outside and exposed to the elements, it needs some serious attention! The drivetrain is completely worn out, corrosion has taken its toll on various bolts and components, and there’s plenty of cleaning and servicing to do. Can we bring this bike back to life and turn it into a reliable, affordable mountain bike for someone in our community? In this restoration, we strip down the necessary components, clean and refresh the frame and parts, service the drivetrain, replace the chain and cables, sort out the brakes, and get everything working smoothly again. We even discover some interesting engineering on the SRAM front derailleur along the way! But the job isn't quite finished after the rebuild. The test ride reveals punctures in both tyres and a cassette that needs replacing, so there are a few final jobs to sort out. 🚲 The best part? Through our community bike library, this bike can be made available for under £100, helping someone get a decent, fully serviced mountain bike without spending a fortune.
