In this episode of Conversation, Onsite by SmallRig sits down with acclaimed Hong Kong director and producer Stanley Kwan 關錦鵬, the filmmaker behind Rouge《胭脂扣》 (1987), Center Stage《阮玲玉》 (1991), and Lan Yu《藍宇》 (2001). Across a career spanning decades, Kwan has created some of the most distinctive works in Chinese-language cinema, exploring identity, desire, memory, and human relationships through an unmistakably personal cinematic language. In this conversation, he looks back at the making of some of his most celebrated films: why Tony Leung’s character in Love Unto Waste carried traces of his younger self; why he refused to simply reproduce the original novel when directing Lan Yu; and how collaboration with longtime production designer William Chang helped transform written stories into unforgettable images. Returning to Rouge, Kwan also reflects on Anita Mui’s portrayal of Fleur, the complexity he saw in the character, and why, faced with the same choices, he believes he might have done the same. More than a retrospective on individual films, the conversation offers a glimpse into Kwan’s approach to adaptation, collaboration, performance, and the instinct that continues to shape his filmmaking.
