IU Came Back After A Year With Two Lead Tracks. She Wrote Both Of Them.

On 10 September 2026 at 6pm KST, IU released a digital single called Unknown Planet. It carries two lead tracks, not one — "Unknown Planet" and "Dear my crazy soulmate" — and she wrote both of them. It is her first release in almost exactly a year. The last was "Bye, Summer" in September 2025. WHY THE WRITING CREDIT IS THE STORY IU debuted in 2008, at fifteen, with an EP called Lost and Found. She did not write it. It was written and composed, start to finish, by professional producers — completely normal for a teenage debut in this industry. By 2017, on Palette, she was writing almost all of it herself. That record is usually treated as the point where she took real control of her own music. Then something unusual happened on her fifth album, Lilac, in 2021. She wrote the lyrics to every track. The original plan was six songs composed by her and six by other people — she ended up credited as co-composer on two, "Celebrity" and "Coin". She cut her own songs. In an interview with W Korea she explained why: the ones she had written were calmer, and they did not fit the tone of the rest of the record. An artist who spent years fighting to write her own material, and who then removed her own material because the album was better without it. Which is the context for this release. After a year away, with an album already delayed, the two songs she chose to lead with are both hers. Eighteen years after a debut she did not write a word of. THE ALBUM, AND THE DELAY Both tracks belong to her sixth studio album, whose release had been delayed on health grounds. That is stated here exactly as it is on the record, and no further. What the concern was, how serious it was, and how she is now are not public, and this video does not speculate about any of it. THE VIDEO The music video for "Dear my crazy soulmate" came out the same day; the one for "Unknown Planet" follows on 16 September. It is not a solo piece — it stars IU alongside the actress Yoo In-na, and features two veteran actresses, Kim Young-ok and Na Moon-hee. IU and Yoo In-na have been close for years, and the audience read the video as being about that friendship immediately. A READING THIS VIDEO DECLINES At least one outlet framed the title as a puzzle to be solved against her private life — a breakup, specifically. Taking a song title and reverse-engineering somebody's relationships out of it is not analysis. It is invention with a real person's name attached, and she has not said any of it. What she has said is in the credits: she wrote both songs. THE CHARTS On release day "Unknown Planet" took No.1 on the Melon HOT100, No.1 on Genie's TOP200 and No.1 on the Bugs real-time chart. "Dear my crazy soulmate" took No.2 on Melon and Bugs, and No.3 on Genie. The same artist held the top two places on two of those charts, with two songs from the same release, on the same afternoon. THE LIMITS No date has been given for the full sixth album. It is not known whether these two songs sit differently on the album than they do as a single. And a number one on day one measures anticipation — whether these songs last is a question for a month from now.
