Most of what you know about ancient teachers comes secondhand — writings, commentaries, guesses. But some of these masters actually sat down together. Student asked master, master answered, back and forth, face to face. Two of those real conversations are at the heart of this one: Daocho and Shan-tao in China, then centuries later, Honen and Shinran in Japan. We're tracing that living thread — starting in 552 CE, the moment Daocho believed the world entered its hardest spiritual age — to find out what "living" as a Buddhist actually means when the ideal feels out of reach.
