Would you accept a pig's kidney to get off dialysis? In the US, doctors have transplanted gene-edited pig kidneys into living patients, and one man lived 271 days without dialysis before moving on to a human kidney transplant. Formal trials have now begun.
This video explains the kidney shortage in Pakistan, India and the US, why scientists turned to pigs, how gene editing stops the body rejecting a pig organ, and the stories of the first patients, including the Karachi-born doctor who co-led the world's first pig heart transplant. It also sets out, with sources, what Al-Azhar, Egypt's Dar al-Ifta, Ayatollah Sistani's office and Pakistani scholars have said about pig organs.
Please note: pig kidney transplants are still experimental and are not available in Pakistan or India. This video reports the views of scholars as published; it does not issue a religious ruling. For any medical or religious decision, consult a qualified doctor and a trusted scholar.
In this video:
• The kidney shortage: 12 people die every day waiting in the US
• Pakistan: dialysis reaches only 1 in 10 patients with kidney failure
• The illegal kidney trade, and why it exists
• Why pigs, and how gene editing works, explained simply
• The Karachi doctor behind the first pig heart transplant
• Tim Andrews: 271 days with a pig kidney, then a human one
• The honest picture: failures, and the new clinical trials
• Pig tissue already used in medicine: heart valves, insulin, heparin
• What Islam says: the principle of necessity, and scholars' different views
• Organ donation: the gap we could fill ourselves
• What's next: pig liver, lung and heart
Sources named in the video include the US government's organ donation agency (HRSA), the WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal, Dawn, Massachusetts General Hospital, NYU Langone, the University of Maryland, Science, The Lancet, Reuters, Al-Azhar, Dar al-Ifta, sistani.org, Jang and the OIC International Islamic Fiqh Academy.
This video is in Urdu. English subtitles are available.
