Don Rickles Left John Wayne Speechless with the Funniest Night Nobody Could Forget

September 1976. John Wayne came on The Tonight Show to talk about The Shootist, and everyone expected a quiet, respectful interview with a legend who wasn't well. Then Johnny Carson announced the second guest: Don Rickles. What followed was an hour nobody could script. The man they called "Mr. Warmth" roasted the Duke's boots, his horse, his walk, and his hat, then did an impression of John Wayne so good it made Wayne laugh until he cried. And when the jokes stopped, the night turned into something nobody expected: a scared little kid from Queens and the cowboy who used to fix everything on Saturday afternoons. An old USC football. A box full of words from the audience. A blank sheet of paper. And one bear hug that lifted the smallest man on the stage clean off the floor. #JohnWayne #DonRickles #JohnnyCarson #TheTonightShow #TheShootist #HollywoodLegends #ClassicHollywood #OldHollywood #Comedy #CelebrityStories
