Leaving Your Baby in the NICU Doesn’t Make You a Bad Mom

Having a baby in the NICU can make you feel like you are supposed to sit beside that bed every second of every day. But mama, you NEED to go home. In this video, I’m talking about one of the hardest parts of the NICU journey — leaving your baby at the hospital and walking out those doors without them. The guilt can be overwhelming. You may feel like a bad mom for leaving the NICU, going home to sleep, spending time with your other children, taking a shower, eating a real meal, or simply giving yourself a minute to breathe. But leaving your baby in the NICU does not mean you love them any less. As a mama who has been through the NICU and PICU with both of my babies, I know how unnatural it feels to go home without your baby. You are supposed to bring your newborn home, put them in their car seat, walk through your front door, and start life together. When your baby is in the NICU, everything feels completely different. This video is for the NICU mom who feels guilty for leaving, the parent who is exhausted but afraid to rest, and anyone trying to figure out how to survive the emotional side of having a premature baby, medically fragile baby, or newborn in the NICU. Your baby needs you — but that does not mean they need you sitting beside their NICU bed 24 hours a day. Sometimes being a good NICU mom means going home, sleeping, eating, spending time with your family, and coming back with enough strength to keep going.
