A budget holiday in the Maldives - Guide

Most videos about Maldives show $2000 per night overwater villas and seaplanes. That’s one way to do it. This video is about the other way: staying on local islands and doing Maldives on a normal budget. Maldives is a country of over 1000 islands. About 170 of them are inhabited by locals, and those are the ones you can visit as a tourist. These local islands have guesthouses, public beaches, cafes, and shops. The prices are closer to what you’d pay in Southeast Asia, not a luxury resort. In this video I break down exactly how much a trip costs if you skip the resort. I’ll cover flights to Male, the main airport, and then how to get to the islands using public ferries and speedboats. Public ferries run daily between Male and many local islands and they cost between $2 and $5. Speedboats are faster but more expensive, usually $25 to $60 depending on the island. For accommodation, guesthouses on islands like Maafushi, Fulidhoo, Dhigurah, and Thulusdhoo range from $40 to $90 per night in 2026 for a double room. They include wifi, breakfast, and are a 2 to 10 minute walk from a bikini beach. That’s the beach where tourists can wear swimwear. Local custom means swimwear is only allowed on designated tourist beaches, not on the main island beach where locals live. Food is another big cost saver. Resorts charge $50+ per meal. On local islands you can eat at cafes for $5 to $10 per meal. Try mas huni for breakfast, garudhiya fish curry for lunch, and roshi bread. There are also small grocery stores if you want to self-cater. Activities don’t have to be expensive either. The house reef for snorkeling is often right off the beach and it’s free. You’ll see fish, rays, and coral without paying for a tour. If you want to do a day trip to a sandbank or go dolphin watching, local operators charge $30 to $60 instead of $200+ through a resort. Diving and excursions are optional. You can have a full trip just swimming and walking the island. I also go over the rules you need to know for 2026. You must fill out the IMUGA arrival and departure form online within 96 hours of travel. It’s free. Alcohol is not sold on local islands. If you want alcohol you’d need to book a resort day pass or stay at a resort island. Dress modestly when you’re not on the bikini beach. This video is not saying you should never stay at a resort. Resorts are beautiful and for some people that’s the point of Maldives. This is just showing the budget alternative that exists and that many travelers use.
