He was born in Germany and studied literature and philosophy at the University of Heidelberg before obtaining a doctorate in German literature from the University of Berlin. Goebbels joined the Nazi Party in 1924 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of Hitler's most trusted advisors. He was appointed as Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda in 1933, and became responsible for controlling the media, arts, and culture in Nazi Germany. Under Goebbels' direction, the Nazi regime disseminated propaganda that vilified Jews, homosexuals, disabled people, and other groups considered undesirable by the regime. He was a key figure in the orchestration of the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938, which saw the destruction of Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues throughout Germany.
