Pip is preparing a tiny flower gift. Help him move one paper flower into his basket, then count the flowers that stay on the tray. A gentle, original learning story for preschoolers ages 3–5, with time to answer. CHILD LEARNING OPPORTUNITY Practice taking one object away and recounting the remaining group: three to two, two to one, and four to three. Each count word points to one remaining flower. The flower in the basket is separate from the group being counted. FOR PARENTS: WATCH, THEN PLAY 1. Start together with three large blocks on a towel. 2. Ask your child to move one block off the towel. 3. Ask, “How many blocks stay on the towel?” Touch each remaining block once as you count together. 4. Try two blocks, then four if your child enjoys it. Give time to respond; model the count if needed. An adult should start and remain nearby. Use large age-appropriate blocks. Setup takes only familiar materials; no craft supplies or purchase required. No fixed amount of independent play is promised. Choose screen-free activities for the final hour before bedtime. RESEARCH AND LIMITS Head Start P-MATH 6 describes adult-supported subtraction of very small collections at 36–48 months and representing subtraction by separating objects at 48–60 months. P-MATH 3 covers matching one count word to each object. https://headstart.gov/school-readines... The IES/What Works Clearinghouse guide for preschool, prekindergarten and kindergarten rates its broad number-and-operations recommendation “moderate evidence.” It does not test this video or our home activity. https://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/practiceg... This episode offers practice; it is not a scientifically proven intervention. No video-specific learning gains, neuroscience effects, IQ, sleep or retention claims, and no child audience test.
