32 original songs, mixed the way the records they come from were mixed: for a three-inch speaker in a plastic box, and never for the big set in the living room. ▶ THE FIRST MUSIC THAT WAS NOT FOR YOUR PARENTS. Every song written before this one was written for everybody. One radio, one family, one station, and whatever came out of it had to work for six people at once — a grandmother, a father, a child. That is a real constraint and it makes a real kind of music. Broad. Pleasant. Nothing sharp about anything, because sharp loses two of the six. Then a couple of things happened that had nothing to do with art. Radios got small and cheap enough that a second one could exist in a house. Young people had money of their own for the first time, and nobody to ask about spending it. And somebody worked out that you could write a song aimed at a person instead of at a household. That is the whole invention. Not the volume, not the beat, not the haircuts. Somebody made something and had you in mind while they made it, and nobody had ever done that before. The rest follows from it, including the parts everybody remembers wrongly. The bans were the best advertising anybody ever got. The meetings held about us were held by frightened, kind people who meant well and were reasoning correctly from everything they had ever seen. They said it was a phase, and they were not being stupid — everything before it had been. ▶ THE ONE TO LISTEN TO Track 25 — "Somebody Made This for Me." It sounds small when you say it out loud and it is not small. I am a long way from any of that. Different country, different century. And the first time a record came on that was clearly not for my father and not for the neighbours, I understood it with my whole body, and it was exactly the same thing. Being sold to and being seen felt identical from the inside, and I do not care. ▶ WHY IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS Nobody who made these records heard them on anything good, and they knew it. Everything sits in one narrow band, bright and hard, nothing deep at the bottom for a speaker that could never reproduce it. That is not a limitation anybody suffered. It is a target they were aiming at. And it is fast — all of it, every record, in a hurry. Because the people it was made for had to be somewhere by a time. ▶ TRACKLIST 00:00 Ruby & the Curfew 01:59 Home by Eleven 04:22 My Own Money for the First Time 06:19 The Radio in the Living Room Belonged to Him 08:52 So I Got a Small One 10:59 Under the Blanket, Very Quiet 14:29 A Record Hop Has No Band 16:39 Nobody Over Twenty in This Room 18:54 Two Dollars and a Ride 20:56 They Held a Meeting About Us 23:21 And Banned It in Three Counties 25:13 The Song Got Bigger Every Time They Said No 27:24 The One I Could Not Explain to Her 31:18 It Was Never Meant for the Whole House 33:26 One Set, One Family, One Station 35:49 Take It, I Have to Leave at Eleven 37:53 The Car Was the Only Room We Had 40:10 Loud in a Small Speaker 42:37 Everybody Here Is Somebody's Kid 45:07 The Walk Home After 47:46 Play It Once More, I Am Late Already 50:10 They Thought It Was a Phase 52:55 It Was Not a Phase 54:36 Turn It Down, She Is Coming Up the Stairs 56:58 Somebody Made This for Me 1:00:02 We Were Not a Market to Each Other 1:02:34 Nobody Had to Explain It to the Next Ones 1:04:20 You Were Twenty Once 1:06:22 Everything Happens Before Eleven 1:08:19 Show the Kid How to Work the Dial 1:10:32 Run, It Is Two Minutes to Eleven 1:13:10 Awake Until Two ▶ GOOD FOR Working · driving · the kitchen · and anybody who has ever had to turn something down 🎵 All 32 songs are original — music and lyrics written for this record.
