Naser Khosrow street was built during the Qajar era more than 130 years ago and was once known as “Naseriyeh,” named after Naser al-Din Shah. Before this street even existed, this area was part of the old royal district and defensive moat of Tehran. Walking through Naser Khosrow today feels very different from the modern parts of the city. The atmosphere here is older, denser, more chaotic, and filled with layers of history. Historic buildings stand next to crowded pharmacies, old shops, street vendors, handcarts, and narrow alleyways packed with people. Some of Tehran’s most important historical landmarks are located around this street, including Darolfonoon — the first modern school in Iran — and the famous Shams-ol-Emareh palace from the Qajar period. For decades, Naser Khosrow has also been known as one of Tehran’s main streets for pharmacies, medical equipment, camera stores, and small specialty shops. Many people from across the city still come here looking for things that are difficult to find elsewhere.
