Yes. There is a special exception for dependent parents. A taxpayer who pays more than half the cost of maintaining the parent's separate home and can claim the parent as a dependent may qualify for head of household even though the parent lives elsewhere. Does supporting a dependent who lives elsewhere give head of household status? Generally no, unless the dependent is a parent. For most dependents, the person must live in the taxpayer's home for more than half the year for the taxpayer to qualify for head of household. Does a dependent friend qualify a taxpayer for head of household? No. Head of household requires a qualifying family relationship. A friend who is claimed as a dependent does not meet the relationship test, so the taxpayer must file as single. When does a widow or widower qualify as a surviving spouse? Surviving spouse status requires a dependent child in the household for the two years following the year of the spouse's death. Without a qualifying dependent child, the taxpayer cannot use surviving spouse status. What filing status applies to an abandoned spouse with no dependent child? A taxpayer who is still legally married and lacks a dependent child cannot use the abandoned spouse rules to file as head of household, so the only available option is married filing separately. #CPAexam #CMAexam #enrolledagentexam #accountingcourses #collegecourses #courses #REG #filingstatus #headofhousehold #individualtax #ProfessorFarhat #accountingstudents
