The founder of Pure Land Shin Buddhism, Master Shinran, was deeply tormented by the realisation that the self he showed to others did not align with who he really was, and he called himself a “hypocrite” for concealing his true nature.
This video discusses what Buddhism teaches on the difference between the authentic self and our public personas, specifically with these three points:
1. The three karmas
2. “The heart and the mouth do not agree”
3. The Mirror of Dharma
I hope this will be useful for those who have found themselves wondering who they really are.
Buddhism pushes us to closely examine our true nature, and teaches that it is precisely such beings as us that Amida vowed to save, exactly as we are.
