Tallinn kept its medieval town almost whole. In five minutes: a church spire that may once have been the tallest building on Earth, two towns, one above the other (the upper town on Toompea hill and the merchants’ lower town), a Gothic town hall finished in 1404 and a pharmacy first recorded in 1422, almost two kilometres of medieval wall with a tower named “peek into the kitchen”, and Tallinn’s claim to the first public Christmas tree, which Riga disputes. Plus Peter the Great’s palace at Kadriorg, and how to visit well.
