Bonderam is a vibrant monsoon festival celebrated on the picturesque island of Divar in Goa. It takes place in August, coinciding with the feast of St. Peter, the patron saint of the island. The word Bonderam comes from the Portuguese word “Bandeira” (flag). The festival traces its origin to old disputes between local villages over land boundaries, which were once settled by placing flags. Over time, this custom evolved into a lively cultural celebration. The festival is marked by colorful flag parades, traditional music, floats, and dances that showcase Goan heritage. Locals dress in bright costumes, and there are mock battles with toy weapons, symbolizing the historic boundary fights. Today, Bonderam has become not just a village festival but also a popular attraction for visitors, reflecting Goa’s spirit of community, fun, and cultural pride.
