Welcome back to the podcast! In this chilling episode, we dive into one of the most brutal and bloody events in maritime history: the 1809 Boyd Massacre
When the British brigantine Boyd anchored in New Zealand's Whangaroa Harbour, a horrifying chain of events was set into motion. During the voyage, the ship's captain had tied up and severely whipped a young Māori chief named Te Ara, completely ignoring his privileged status and inflicting a deep loss of mana (face). Seeking utu (revenge) for this humiliation, local warriors launched a stealthy and devastating night attack on the vessel.
In a terrifying turn of events, between 66 and 70 European passengers and crew were killed, dismembered, and eaten. The horror escalated when warriors looting the ship accidentally sparked a flint near the gunpowder cache, triggering a massive explosion that blew the ship apart and burned it down to its copper sheathing. Because of the sheer amount of bloodshed and destruction, the charred, sunken hull of the Boyd was declared tapu—a strict, sacred prohibition meaning the cursed waters and wreck are forbidden to be disturbed.
Tune in to this deep-dive podcast episode as we unpack the cultural clashes, the horrifying maritime lore, and the tragic, mistaken retaliations that left a dark, lingering energy over the harbor.
