Cinq Danses Dogoriennes pour 5 Timbales et Violoncelle Étienne Perruchon (1958-2019) Duo Simuldos: Crystal Kim - Cello Manuel López - Percussion The French film “Dogora” from 2004 depicts an imaginary country in central Eastern Europe whose soundtrack is composed by Étienne Perruchon. Continuing on the inspiration he had for the “country,” he wrote five contrasting dances portraying every facet of the country’s culture, featuring the unusual but bold instrumentation of timpani and cello. The first dance’s bold character is established right away; the main theme is shared by the cello and timpani, reminiscent of a tango style. The second dance is very fast, displaying plenty of energy and rhythmic character. The hypnotic third dance opens with a repetitive accompaniment in the timpani to an intimate ever-changing melody played by the cello. The fourth dance is a slow, seductive waltz played by both musicians, showcasing an exquisite texture created by the contrast of the constant roll of the timpani with the pizzicato, and later arco playing of the cello. In closing, the final movement is a vivid and fast celebratory dance, marked by the cellist’s constant train of sixteenth notes; the timpanist’s skills are demonstrated through the constant change of tuning, while maintaining a solid, energic ensemble. 1re Danse 0:03 2e Danse 2:47 3e Danse 5:34 4e Danse 8:27 5e Danse 11:14 Recorded Live at Pollack Hall, McGill University, Montreal, Québec 6 May 2022
