BYD has launched the Shark pick-up in the UK and for the first time, the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok could feel like prey. As well as its American truck looks, the Shark arrives with almost SUV-like ride comfort, a premium interior and loads of tech.
The plug-in hybrid petrol/electric Shark delivers up to 55 miles of electric driving range and an overall range of well over 400 miles. Its dual motors and electronic systems cope well with mild off-road conditions and while its 790 kg payload is less than established rivals, it does mean some useful tax benefits.
If you’re looking for a new pick-up then you need to watch this one!
✅ Really impressive ride comfort for a pick-up
✅ Excellent interior with high specification and comfort
✅ 55 miles electric driving range is more than rivals
❌ 790 kg payload is less than the competition
❌ Touchscreen controls can be awkward on the move
❌ Needs time to prove itself

Apologies for some camera shake in this one, totally the fault of the operator – me. And apologies to Isuzu UK for constantly referring to the D-Max as the KB, old habits die hard.
