Within the broader biblical canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church—traditionally counted at eighty-one books, with some collections numbering higher—are ancient texts absent from Western canons, notably the Book of Jubilees and 1 Enoch. While fragmentary Aramaic manuscripts from Qumran Cave 4 confirm 1 Enoch's ancient roots, the full text survives only in the ancient classical Ethiopic language (Ge'ez). Among its most debated sections is the Book of the Parables (1 Enoch 37–71), which introduces a cosmic figure transcending ordinary angelic ranks: an entity chosen, named, and hidden before creation itself, tasked with guarding and sustaining the righteous.
This documentary explores the profound apocalyptic christology and angelology embedded in the Ethiopian tradition:
• The Pre-Existent Protector: In 1 Enoch 48:2–7, this mysterious figure's name is uttered before the sun and stars were created, chosen and hidden before the foundation of the world to serve as "a staff for the righteous" and a light to the nations (echoing Isaiah 49:6). In 1 Enoch 62:7, he is described as preserved in the presence of the Lord of Spirits and revealed to the elect.
• The Titles and Cosmic Hierarchy: The text identifies this figure with the celestial "Head of Days" (1 Enoch 46:1–3), designating him as "that Son of Man," the "Righteous One," the "Anointed" (Messiah), and predominantly the "Chosen One" (Elect One). While Jubilees 2:2 places the creation of all angelic orders on the first day of creation, this entity's name precedes the cosmic order itself.
• Enthronement and Judgment: In 1 Enoch 62:2–5, the Lord of Spirits seats the Elect One directly upon the throne of His glory to execute judgment against oppressive rulers who denied the Lord and His Anointed (1 Enoch 48:10)—a position beyond the archangels Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and Phanuel (1 Enoch 40:2–9) and the sleepless Seraphim, Cherubim, and Ophanim who guard the heavenly throne (1 Enoch 71:7).
• Angelic Guardians vs. The Supreme Guardian: How the promise of angelic watchers guarding the righteous "like the apple of an eye" (1 Enoch 100:5; 104:1) operates under the overarching authority of this pre-existent figure, who directly preserves the eternal lot of the faithful.
• Textual Controversies and Modern Scholarship: The ongoing scholarly debate surrounding 1 Enoch 71:14 ("You are the Son of Man" vs. "This is the Son of Man"), the absence of the Parables among the Dead Sea Scrolls, their dating around the turn of the era (Boccaccini, Nickelsburg), the recovery of the Ge'ez manuscripts by James Bruce in 1773, and the first English translation published by Richard Laurence in 1821.
