Every year, more than ten million people come to Lake Lanier to swim, boat, and relax. Almost none of them know what lies beneath the water. Before the lake, there was a valley. Farms, churches, roads, cemeteries. And a town called Oscarville, with a history Georgia stayed silent about for nearly a hundred years. In the 1950s, the water covered it all. Since then, hundreds of people have drowned here. Locals have a saying: the lake takes people. In this episode of Built on the Dead, we go to the bottom of Lake Lanier. The flooded town, the graves that were never moved, the Lady of the Lake, and the question nobody can fully answer: is it just a dangerous lake, or a place that remembers? Get comfortable. Turn off the lights. 0:00 The car at the bottom of the lake 2:05 The lake everyone loves 4:06 The valley before the water 6:21 The dark history of Oscarville 8:44 What was left beneath 10:58 The death count 13:08 The Lady of the Lake 15:32 What the locals say 17:42 The explanation without the supernatural 19:56 Is the lake cursed?
