Obsession is not written by showing what a character does. It is written by showing what they are willing to lose. Whiplash never once tells you Andrew Neiman is obsessed. It just keeps the receipts — three times he puts something he loves on the table and pushes it away, and each payment comes out of a different account. Love, then dignity, then his body. This is the mistake almost every script makes with a driven character: it writes them working. Montages, late nights, bleeding hands. But working is diligence, and your audience will not do you the favour of confusing the two.
