A World of Forestry in Washington Park 👀 PT 1

The World Forestry Center Discovery Museum in Portland's Washington Park connects visitors to the importance of forests through hands-on exhibits, rotating art installations, and educational programs. The non-profit organization grew out of Portland's historic 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition forestry display and was established in its current form following a 1964 fire that destroyed the original giant log structure. The striking two-story, 20,000-square-foot wooden facility opened in 1971 and features Northwest Regional-style octagonal architecture designed by John Storrs. The first floor immerses visitors in regional forest ecosystems, featuring a giant cross-section of an old-growth Douglas fir with growth rings marking centuries of local history. Guests can use simulators, sit inside a safari vehicle to learn about global ecosystems, or explore how wood is used in everyday life. This permanent experience highlights the interconnectedness of forest management and climate challenges. The second floor hosts rotating gallery spaces, including featured installations like Lookout Landscape, which blend fine art with environmental storytelling. The museum offers scavenger hunts, monthly craft events, and storytimes designed for children. Public events range from artist talks and festivals to professional forestry forums.
