It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At about 10:43 PM on October 12, 2022, the Vineland Police received a 911 call from the State Police about a driver acting strangely in their area. The caller had followed a 2018 Honda Civic after it crashed into a guard rail on Route 55. Officer Jeffrey Rowan saw the car parked on North East Avenue, just north of East Park Avenue. The caller was there and confirmed she was the one who had reported the driver. Officer Rowan approached the driver, identified as 24-year-old Sierra Rule. As he spoke with her, he noticed her speech was slurred and smelled alcohol in the car. Not long after, Officers John Rizzo and Amariel Perez arrived to help with the situation. Officer Perez began to ask Sierra about the damage to her car and where she had just come from. Sierra explained that she had been working as a dancer at the Playhouse Lounge in Burlington, NJ. At first, she said she hadn't had any alcohol, but later she admitted that she had drunk some wine earlier in the evening. While the officers were busy sorting out their investigation and working with the State Police, Sierra kept insisting that she had to use the restroom. The officers, suspecting she might be impaired, offered her a chance to do some field sobriety tests. However, since Sierra continued to mention her urgent need for a bathroom break, they got the go-ahead from a Sergeant to hold the tests at the police headquarters instead. Officer Perez took Sierra to the Vineland Police Department, where she finally had the opportunity to use the restroom. After Sierra visited the restroom, Officer Christian Morales began the field sobriety tests. The first test was called the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Officer Morales observed that Sierra's eyes did not follow smoothly, and there was noticeable shaking at the farthest point her eyes could move. He also noticed the shaking began before her eyes reached a 45-degree angle in both eyes.Next came the Walk and Turn test. During this test, Sierra struggled to walk heel-to-toe in a straight line. She relied on her arms for balance and did not take the right number of steps. The final test was the One Leg Stand. For this test, Sierra had trouble lifting her foot correctly and counting in the right order. Sierra was pulled aside after officers noticed her slurred speech and the smell of alcohol. She struggled to perform the field sobriety tests, which led to her being handcuffed and taken to a bench. After observing her for 20 minutes, Officer Morales explained her rights and the rules for drivers. Sierra agreed to take a breath test, and the results showed her blood alcohol content was 0.13%, well above the legal limit of 0.08%. Once she was booked and processed, a responsible person picked her up after signing a form acknowledging potential liability. Sergeant Smith then issued citations for driving under the influence and reckless driving. On June 15, 2023, court records show that the DWI citation against Sierra was dropped, thanks to the prosecutor's choice. Instead of that charge, she agreed to plead guilty to reckless driving.
