In Episode 03 of Onomatocodeia, we look at the early years of Popcap Games, from the creation of the company to the creation of one of their earliest games: Bejeweled. The History of Bejeweled is a fascinating one, and also serves as an important milestone in the history of casual gaming, the indie gaming scene, and match 3 video games. Arcade Castle takes a look at all of this, and more, in today's episode. Arcade Castle also looks at the Bejeweled board game from 2013. Developed by Hasbro and Popcap games, how can you turn a single player gaming experience akin to Microsoft's Solitare (as Kapalka has argued in interviews) and turn it into a multiplayer tabletop experience. This episode examines the rules, gameplay, and components of the Bejeweled board game and tries to determine how well it captures the classic match 3's iconic gameplay, how it adapts that gameplay to the tabletop and, most importantly, whether or not it is fun to play. Bejeweled is the first of four games to be inducted into The Strong Museum's World Video Game Hall of Fame for 2020. The Strong Museum of Play "is a highly interactive, collections-based museum devoted to the history and exploration of play." Not only do they house one of the largest collections of artifacts related to play, they also house and host the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
