Every May, the streets of Asakusa, Tokyo erupt into one of Japan's most powerful festivals — Sanja Matsuri.
This is a 20-minute highlight of the grand centerpiece:
the three sacred mikoshi depart from Asakusa Shrine, fill the grounds of Sensoji Temple with thunderous energy, rise above the crowd in front of the Main Hall, and pass through the iconic Hozomon Gate.
The mikoshi carried out from Asakusa Shrine wind through the temple grounds —
tossed, lifted, and carried against the backdrop of the Five-Story Pagoda and Hozomon Gate.
This overwhelming energy and scale can only be felt in person.
