New Zealand Winter Trout Fishing - Session 4 - Hinemaiaia (Mid) - With a one in a million hookup!

This was to be the last full day of fishing before heading home the next day. Today, I'm not TroutSoloNZ as my fishing buddy had joined me the day before. The plan was to head to the top car park on the Hinemaiaia and set my friend up for Euro-nymphing as best as I could. Once the crowds turned up, we would head back for food and then I was to take him up the upper Waitahanui and show him what he has been missing out on. After arriving at the hotspot I found the day before and setting up his five-weight as an impromptu Euro rig, I tied on two of my best homemade flies and I gave him a quick streamside Euro lesson. He promptly hooked and lost a rainbow due to the tip section of his rod coming off and breaking his leader near the fly-line. With that sorted, I left to fish further downstream. A short time and a couple of fish later, I received a text to say he had taken a tumble and was heading back to the motel for some dry clothes. I returned to the hotspot to await his return. As the place was starting to get popular, I decided to fish it while I waited for him. That produced four more rainbows including the one that he busted off. A one in a million catch for sure, but at least I got my flies back, landed his trout, and freed it of the tackle. Anyway, as I caught it all on film the Shaggy-Dog tale will stand the test of time. The equipment that caught the fish is as follows; The rod is a "Primal" branded, "Zone" model, 10' 6" length 3 weight. The fly line is an Airflo SLN Euro Nymph Comp Special. The leader is 10' 12lb mono, to 9.5' of 3X Fluorocarbon to the point fly, as in the Taupō Fishing District the new rule is your leader must not exceed 2 rod lengths (21 feet for my 10'6" rods) in total length. This includes the tippet. At least I don't need to carry a tape measure to check it now 😄. I tie my own Euro flies. My point fly was this pattern    • Generic Soft Hackle Nymph - Version 2.0   tied on a size 10 Barbless jig hook with a 4.5mm slotted bead. The dropper tag fly that tempted the other three trout was simple soft egg pattern. I don't have a tying video for these, as I made hundreds a few years back in the off season. I probably won't need to tie any for a few more years, if ever. If enough viewers express interest, I will make and post a tying video for these egg flies. Please leave any requests in the comments.
