So Lexington-raised trainer Kenny McPeek chooses a $350,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling he bought for clients to have the name Coach Pope for the University of Kentucky men's basketball coach. You might think that's pressure, naming a horse for someone so prominent. Kenny tells us, no, pressure is naming a horse for you daughter because then you can never sell them! Regardless, Coach Pope is a good one, winning a Churchill Downs maiden race by 12 1/2 lengths after a second in his debut at Saratoga, and then finishing second in Keeneland's G1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity after doing the dirty work of dogging front-running Q B Rocket. McPeek talks about that, how it sets him up for Friday's $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland, this morning's easy five-eighths of a mile work in 1:02.20 in company of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf prospect Real Goodbar and looking ahead to next spring. But first, jockey Jose Ortiz breaks down the race and talks about Coach Pope, both the horse and the person. We also ask Jose about two of his other Breeders' Cup mounts: Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo in the Classic and the brilliantly fast 3-year-old Englishman in the Sprint as both take on older horses for the first time.
