Why do some people spot business opportunities that others miss? Is entrepreneurial alertness an innate talent, or can it be developed through education?
In this episode of Coach For Excellence, we explore key outcomes from Ramsey et al.’s 2025 research published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Management. The study examines how entrepreneurial alertness, motivational cultural intelligence (CQ), and creative self-efficacy work together to help individuals recognize opportunities and believe in their ability to develop creative solutions.
🔍 KEY OUTCOMES FROM THE RESEARCH
✅ 1. Entrepreneurial Alertness Can Be Learned
Entrepreneurial alertness is the ability to notice overlooked opportunities without actively searching for them. It involves three connected capabilities:
• Alert scanning and search — staying attentive to emerging ideas and information.
• Alert association and connections — connecting the dots between seemingly unrelated information.
• Evaluation and judgment — recognizing which opportunities may have potential.
Examples include Airbnb identifying an accommodation gap in San Francisco and Sara Blakely turning a personal frustration with pantyhose into the idea behind Spanx.
✅ 2. Motivational Cultural Intelligence Acts as a “Turbocharger”
Motivational CQ is the drive and willingness to engage with unfamiliar cultures. The research examines how it strengthens the relationship between entrepreneurial alertness and creative self-efficacy.
Examples such as Netflix’s investment in local storytelling and IKEA’s adaptation to Chinese consumer preferences illustrate why understanding and engaging with different cultural contexts matters in international business.
✅ 3. Creative Self-Efficacy Is About Belief, Not Just Ability
Creative self-efficacy is the belief that you can produce creative outcomes. It is different from actual creativity, but it can influence whether you attempt to solve a difficult problem, persist, and explore possible solutions.
🧠 WHY DOES ENTREPRENEURIAL ALERTNESS BUILD CREATIVE CONFIDENCE?
The research framework suggests several mechanisms:
• Activating mental frameworks that help identify opportunities.
• Connecting seemingly unrelated ideas.
• Considering problems from different perspectives.
• Recognizing more possibilities for creative solutions.
💡 WHAT CAN ORGANIZATIONS LEARN?
Examples such as Pixar’s Braintrust and Atlassian’s ShipIt illustrate how candid feedback, experimentation, and opportunities to develop ideas can support creative confidence.

🌍 WHY THIS MATTERS FOR LEADERS AND GLOBAL CAPABILITY CENTRES (GCCs)
In global business environments, recognizing opportunities requires more than technical expertise. Leaders and teams also need curiosity about unfamiliar markets, the willingness to engage across cultures, and confidence in their ability to develop creative solutions.
The key takeaway: Learn to notice opportunities. Build the motivation to engage across cultures. Develop the confidence to act on ideas.
