West Bengal is witnessing a major expansion of its river-based infrastructure and industrial ecosystem.
A ₹407 crore PPP project at Balagarh, Hooghly is set to develop new container and bulk cargo berths, with a total planned capacity of 2.7 MTPA. The project aims to create an alternative cargo hub and help shift part of Kolkata’s cargo operations away from congested city areas.
At the same time, a ₹200 crore shipbuilding and ship-repair facility is coming up at Motirampur, Kukrahati, Purba Medinipur, along the Hooghly River. Spread across 12 acres, the facility will include a dry dock and is targeting the construction of 4–6 ships every year.
Together, these projects represent around ₹607 crore of planned investment, with the potential to boost logistics, shipbuilding, employment and ancillary industries in West Bengal.
