Rubio accused Iran of attempting to build massive conventional military capabilities to protect its nuclear program, noting that recent military operations have weakened its missile, drone, naval, and air capabilities. Nevertheless, he said Iran continues to possess significant military capabilities, while the status of its nuclear program remains difficult to assess due to limited access for inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). At the same time, Rubio described the Iranian economy as heading toward a “free fall,” holding Iran’s leadership responsible for the deterioration in conditions and accusing it of directing resources toward Hezbollah, Hamas, Iraqi militias, and the Houthis rather than improving the lives of the Iranian people. In Athens, Rubio emphasized Greece’s importance as a strategic ally of Washington, announcing expanded cooperation in defense, counterterrorism, energy, and technology, alongside a new partnership between the U.S. National Guard and Greece. Rubio is also preparing to present a broader vision for the future of the West, calling for what he described as a “great renewal of the Western spirit.” He linked national strength to manufacturing, defense, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, energy, and supply-chain security.
